Module 1: Welcome, Orientation & Garden Planning
Vegetable Gardening for Resilience Curriculum 📚 Course Description This 8-week hybrid course empowers learners to build food resilience through organic gardening, low-cost techniques, and community connection. Lessons are spaced out biweekly, allowing time to reflect, apply lessons, and build gardens between sessions. Key Notes: Audience: Atlanta Proper Residents, 18-55 Pacing: Biweekly lessons, Live sessions Week 1 and Week 16 Online Class Times: Tuesdays, 6-8PM EST Climate/Season: Planning for June – October Atlanta growing season Starter Kits: Distributed at Kickoff Event (May 30, 2025) Costs: Minimal; encourage resourcefulness Focus: Container gardening, vertical gardening, herbs/vegetables suited for Atlanta 📈 Course Structure Week 1: Live Kickoff Event Weeks 2–16: LMS distance learning (video lessons, activities, reflections) Week 16: Live Closing Event & Certificate Ceremony ✅ Weekly Components Video Lesson Downloadable PDF Tools Hands-On Activity Prompt Guest Speaker Recording or Notes Weekly Reflection Journal Uploads (photo or short response)

You’ll also discover how to recognize when your crops are ready to harvest and get hands-on practice with simple preservation methods to enjoy your harvest year-round.

Whether you’re working with a full backyard, a porch, balcony, or just a few containers — you can grow something meaningful. This course will help you make the most of what you’ve got.

 

Overview: Set up your space, gather materials, and prepare for the course. Learn what to expect and how to create a grow setup that fits your home and budget.

JUNE 24, 2025 – ONLINE Lesson 1: Welcome to the Mushroom Cultivation Program (LIVE CLASS) – June 24th LIVE VIRTUAL ONLINE CLASS

 

  • Overview of what to expect during the course
  • The difference between vegetable gardening vs. fungi cultivation
  • Q&A: What are your goals for learning to grow ?

 

Choosing a garden space or container setup

  • Equipment walk-through and mushroom kit unboxing (demo)
  • Basic supply checklist (seeds, gloves, soil, watering tools)
  • Garden location considerations (sunlight, drainage, spacing)
  • Planning for low-cost, small-scale growing
  • Group Discussion 

Learners will:

  • Choose an appropriate garden space or container setup based on their needs

  • Identify basic tools and materials required to get started

  • Understand sunlight, spacing, and drainage for healthy plant growth

  • Explore low-cost options for small-scale gardening

  • Participate in a group discussion to reflect and share ideas

Did you know? Some of the most abundant gardens are grown in just a few containers or 5-gallon buckets. It’s not about how much space you have — it’s about how you use it!

 

📝 Reflection Prompt (Write in your portal & workbook)

  • What made you want to start gardening or growing food?
  • What kind of space do you have access to (yard, balcony, containers, etc.)?

 

✅ Action Step:

  • Take a photo or sketch your available garden space or your garden plan.
  • Upload your photo/sketch to this week’s submission area in the portal. You can also attach it to your garden journal.

 

Instructions:

Take a few quiet moments to reflect on your personal interest in growing. Then, respond to the prompts below. You can type your answer directly into your learning portal. you can also print your workbook page and write your response by hand.

 

Think about questions like:

  • What drew you to this course?
  • Have you ever grown food before?
  • Are you curious about food uses, such as medicinal, or for business?
  • What do you hope to learn or achieve from this experience?

 

In the upcoming reflections segment, Write at least 3–5 sentences in your learner portal  describing what inspired you to start learning about growing food and how you think it could benefit you, your family, or your community.
