📘 Program Overview: Grow Where You Are: Mushroom Cultivation for Resilience is an 8-week hybrid course designed to empower first-time growers and small-space cultivators with the knowledge and skills to grow edible mushrooms at home. This program emphasizes food justice, economic opportunity, and health through accessible, safe, and sustainable practices.

This course is free and open to the public, welcoming aspiring growers in ANY location who want to explore urban mushroom cultivation. While all participants may access online content, only qualified applicants selected through a community raffle will receive physical starter kits and participate in two live events.

🏛️ Live Event Venue:

In recognition of National Fruit and Vegetables Month, both the live kickoff and closing celebration will be hosted at Hillside International Truth Center, 2450 Cascade Rd, Atlanta, GA 30311 in collaboration with Conscious Connection, LLC and LC Career Center, LLC.

  • (LIVE) Kickoff Event: Saturday, June 22, 2025 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM (raffle)
  • Closing Celebration: Saturday, October 26, 2025 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

What Will You Learn?

  • This course is free and open to the public, welcoming new and aspiring gardeners of all experience levels who want to grow their own food at home. It’s an opportunity to join a citywide network of learners dedicated to sustainability, wellness, and economic empowerment. While anyone can access the course online, only qualified applicants selected through our community raffle will receive hands-on starter kits and participate in the two in-person sessions.

Course Content

🌱 Module 1: Getting Started with Growing — Foundations for Success Orientation & Garden Planning
This module welcomes learners into the ATL R.O.O.T.S. program and prepares them for success growing mushrooms or vegetables in small spaces. Whether you're growing in your kitchen, patio, balcony, or community plot, we’ll walk you through everything you need to get started.

🔹 Module 3: Mushroom Biology & Mycelium Networks
Topics: Temperature, light, and humidity needs Substrates: straw, coffee grounds, sawdust Facilitator Notes: Demonstrate fruiting chamber setup Help participants test light and humidity options Activity: Hands-on: Set up mini fruiting area at home Reflection Prompt: What’s your biggest constraint or advantage in your grow space? Mushroom Biology & Mycelium Networks Understand how mushrooms grow, reproduce, and interact with the environment. Learn the difference between mushrooms and mycelium — and why it matters.   Topics Covered: What’s inside the mushroom or gardening kit Why each item matters How to care for your materials What to do first when your kit arrives 📦 Hands-On Prompt: “Unbox your starter kit and share one thing that surprised you. Post a picture or reflection in the discussion board.”
